The Keto Diet is a popular method of eating that is used when people want to burn fat and lose weight. In this video, I’m going to review my thoughts on the sustainability of this eating plan and help you to decide whether it is right for you. You will have to evaluate what your short and long term goals are for getting ripped and I will help you to do that.
First it is important to understand where the ketogenic diet comes from. It is actually an old school diet approach that has been around for a long time. The concept is for you to dramatically switch the proportions of macronutrients that make up your daily caloric intake to shift the body from relying on glucose for its primary fuel source to ketones.
Glucose from carbohydrates is the number one preferred source of fuel for our muscles and brains. In fact, there are certain areas of the brain where glucose is the only source of fuel that can be utilized to provide peak functioning. When you follow a keto diet, you cut your carb intake down to 5% or less of your total daily calories. All of the carbs that you do eat come from green leafy vegetables while great care is taken to avoid starches like rice, potatoes, pasta, oatmeal, beans, etc.
The bulk of your diet comes from fats and proteins. This means that when you are following a ketogenic diet that you are relying on lots of meats, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds, heavy cream, oils, etc. Even healthy foods like fruit are excluded. Foods rich in fiber would also be excluded if they fall in the starchier category named already.
So the idea is to gradually make your body rely on ketones for fuel. While this may be a more efficient energy source it definitely does not come without some repercussions. The biggest of which is the depletion of your body’s stores of glycogen. Glycogen is the stored form of glucose and is kept inside your muscles primarily and broken down for energy when training. If your glycogen levels are depleted it becomes very hard to train intensely.
Even if you do find a way to increase your energy and intensity to train hard, it often results in an increase in cortisol as this presents an increased stress to the body due to the insufficient fuel depots. Both the increase in cortisol and the decreased glycogen can significantly and negatively impact your body’s ability to preserve lean muscle let alone build new muscle tissue.
Many will say that they lose lots of fat when on a ketogenic diet. It is true that you will see rapid weight loss when following a keto diet (making it a perfect option for those that need to fit into a certain outfit and time isn’t on your side). That said, fat loss is a minimal part of the equation. The reason you are losing lots of weight but not necessarily fat is that along with the glycogen depletion comes a lot of lost water.
When carbohydrates are minimized, the hydro portion or water is lost as well. This is why what appears to be many lost pounds on the scale when following a keto diet doesn’t necessarily mean permanent loss. Along those same lines, the very fact that a ketogenic diet is based on deprivation and near exclusion of dietary carbohydrates often leads to this being a solution that is not sustainable.
The real question you have to ask yourself if whether you can maintain whatever diet you follow for life. I believe in long term, permanent weight loss solutions that let you lose body fat while still allowing you to build muscle. If you are looking for a meal plan that allows you to do both and is the same exact one that I use to stay ripped year round, head to http://athleanx.com and get the ATHLEAN-X Training Systems.

Something that you never try, can't have an opinion!!

Just eat whole foods instead of processed ones and try to live a less stressful life. No keto, or peto are needed. Seriously, don't look for quick fixes!

Im producing ketones, burning fat, gaining muscle and feel 3x better in the weight room. Its honestly really sustainable when you start seeing the benefits of it. Not only fat loss

If you're really overweight, keto can work but it's probably not going to be sustainable. You've let yourself go so much and have developed really bad bad-habits that it's going to be a helluva change to manage. You're better off hiring a really good personal trainer that knows nutrition or just a nutritionist at the start. Get your $hit together and get your mind ready.

I love bread and pasta too much for keto
Still, I've lost an ass load of fat and built muscle with a 45-50% carb diet, and genuinely enjoy what I eat
Consistency is key

I was on keto for one month. Lose 5kg but total body fat index stay the same. So what’s the point of this diet for me if I want to build muscles? Only one thing that I get from keto- bloating stomach and pain of overeating.

Hey Jeff, I need some advice. My doctor says that I am diabetic, but it can be reversed by diet and exercise. She told me to concentrate on cardio exercises to lose weight. I also need to reduce my carb intake. But I am not sure what “diet” I should follow to help me get to where I want to be health wise. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks! Don.

My mom has been on a Keto diet for around a year and has lost 40lbs. She doesn’t follow the diet religiously so she still “cheats”. It’s worked for her but some of the alternative foods she eats look repulsive

VEGGIES AND FRUITS ARE CARBS. So many people in the comment section don’t understand how stupid it is to cut these antioxidants out of your diet. Keto long turn is dumb af and not healthy. There is a reason the Inuit tribe now has a genetic mutation to avoid going into ketosis. Because bingo ITS NOT GOOD FOR YOU

If I remember correctly – fat intake is about 70-75 percent whilst the remaining 25 percent is meats, cheeses and shit like that
This is the standard ketogenic way of eating that doesnt take heavy workouts into consideration
for bodybuilders or, say, strength athletes or even average joes that want to lose fat and put some muscle into place – there are some modifications added to this original ketogenic way of eating .
You do something called targeted keto – which is basically keto but you eat some carb before a workout so you get a sugar rush that will be needed for more.explosive power – I think this works especially well.for.beginners.and intermediates
then when you start going towards advanced teritory – you do cyclical keto which is.full glycogen replenishment days so u can do the more demanding workouts
Besides, you cannot convince me that apples or fruits are bad simply because of fructose
so many nutrients and importamt vitamins are.found in fruit, and besides, fiber prevents getting the dreaded blood sugar spike that causes weight gain

PLEASE READ THIS. Maybe this helps some of you guys before doing keto.
i am telling you from my own experience: i was keto for almost a year. It totally FUCKED my life. Yeah. The weight loss in the beginning was great. But i had and still have the biggest sleep deprivation a human being could ever have. Yes i checked my electrolytes. No i wasn’t taking too much or too less fat – macros were on point. It went so bad that i am now hanging back 2 semester from University (i am a law student), having heart palpitations and my body can’t Digest carbs anymore as it used to do. I never had problems with eating carbs, but after this journey i feel like i went from a totally healthy, only slightly overweight girl (2-3 kg overweight) to a heavily, depressed and sick overweight student. I hate this guy for not telling ppl what the real risks of this diet are & of course his mantra of „one diet fits all“. Side note: the problems which came with the ketogenic diet didn’t came at the beginning, they hit after 6 months.
Do you love sleep deprivation and making your body less intolerant to carbs?
Then go for the keto diet bs!
Greetings from Germany.
Recovering now.

dear jeff you right that sustainability is the biggest factor. i agree with that. calorie deficit is what is important. i ve proved a lot of diets, everything works as long as you remain in a calorie deficit. problem is with all that diets, you get hungry all the time, and feel horrible. that where youre completely wrong about keto diet. and i think you ve confused carnivore with keto btw. you get a lot of fiber with keto, you can eat all vegetables you want. especially athletes can be in ketosis with relatively higher carbs .(normally you should be under 30 g/d if you dont train). i dont know if i m in ketosis but definitely low carb <100 g/d. its the first time in my life i dont feel hungry. been doing it for half a year now and dont considering this a diet anymore. lost 27 pounds of fat and gained 6 pounds of muscle, checked with Dexa. i myself dont consider cutting down all crap ie sugars and grains restrictive. thats the biggest restriction with keto.
all and all i think there is two big groups of people: 1) the insulin sensitive (like you obviously) those that have hard time to gain weight, usually have no family history of diabetes and heart disease. those dont need keto at all and they process carbs just fine. just restricting sugar a little bit is what they only need to stay healthy
2) insulin resistant like me. we need to completely eliminate sugar and stay low carb. we get hungry all the time on high carb diets, they re noway sustainable (back to your biggest point), and low carb / keto is probably the ONLY way to go for sustainability. there is no way for a diet to become lifestyle if you re hungry all the time.

It's not a ketosis diet unless your fat calories approach 80% or more of your daily caloric intake. Please do not confuse it with other low-carb diets. They do NOT work on the same principals. Do the real deal and you'll feel fantastic (and WILL maintain your muscle mass without 'having to reduce fat in trade for more protein'). If what I'm saying is new to you, that's OK .. continue your studies and good luck to you. 🙂
